Dad Can Handle It!

A few months ago, a line-up of Same Difference events filled my calendar. I felt honored to talk in front of groups of kids in Chester & Philadelphia, PA and my hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. But after reviewing my schedule, I realized I’d have to be away from my family for 10 days.

I went to my husband to ask how he felt about holding down the fort while I headed to the East Coast.

“You can’t pass this up, Calida,” he said beaming. “You gotta go for it! But how am I going to do the girls’ hair?”

The Power of the Word

I have always been a believer in the power of the word.  I’m am constantly trying to get my daughters to talk to each other with love, even when they are at each others throats. So when I came across an article about the scientific proof that words can alter the physical world around us, I took notice. It was a simple experiment conducted by a researcher and alternative healer from Japan, Dr. Masaru Emoto. He added water to three jars of rice and said “thank you” to the first jar, “you fool” to the second jar, and ignored the third. The results were amazing. After 30 days, the rice that was told “Thank you” was barely changed, while the others grew rotten.

The Swim

A few months ago, I joined a swim club in Los Angeles after a friend raved about how great she felt physically and mentally after each session. Her toned arms convinced me that swimming might a good way for me to get fit. I’ve always loved to swim, so I decided to take the plunge.

On my first day, I came prepared: new goggles, new swim cap, new bathing suit. I arrived early for the 5:30 a.m. class to introduce myself to the coach.

“Can you swim?” she asked as she shook my hand.

“Yes” I replied, thinking back to my old swimming days (see image below for reference).

The Mask

It was that time of year again. Between the Halloween parties and events at my kids’ schools, I needed a costume for myself. Ughh… I had been thinking maybe this year I should just buy a mask, especially since I had been comfortably wearing one for weeks. The funny part is I did not even realize it until it slipped off when I was at the gym a week before.

Passing Time

My father always told me that time passes quickly as you get older. But mid-August. Really? The last two months have been a blur of washing chlorine-soaked wet towels and sweeping up gritty sand trekked in from park and beach outings. But I am not complaining. There was a period this season when time could not move fast enough.
